Motherwell’s Calder Primary has been broken into by scrap metal thieves and robbed - just days after it closed as a school forever.

The council - which may eventually aim to sell on the building or the land it stands on - says it’s the latest example of a trend, and has appealed for people to contact police if they have information.

The break-in at the Draffen Street premises happened some time between 4pm on Friday and 1am on Saturday, and “several” lengths of metal piping were taken.

While council property, including schools, has been targeted in the past, the fact that the now former Calder Primary was chosen is seen as unusual as it is not in a secluded spot, and burglars could have been observed by passers-by.

The council says it will review security measures at the property.
