Roadworks misery for town centre motorists

WORK costing more than £500,000 to improve the gas network in Motherwell has started.

Gas pipeline operator Scotland Gas Networks began upgrading the iron gas mains in the town centre on Monday - with the work expected to last around 10 weeks.

Congestion has increased with the work centered around Merry Street, Mill Road and Dalziel Street. The gas mains in these areas have come to the end of their useful life and will be replaced with durable plastic pipe.

For the duration of the work, one lane will be closed to traffic on Merry Street with vehicles travelling in one lane from the direction of Carfin.

There will also be full road closures on Mill Road and Dalziel Street, though residents will still have access.

Gordon Abbott, SGN, construction manager, said: “Disruption will be kept to a minimum and we would urge the community to be bear with us while we carry out these essential works.”
