Public is to get another look at store proposals

SUPERMARKET giant Sainsbury’s is to hold a second round of public exhibitions next week to update the community on changes to its proposed store on the site of the former bus depot in Hamilton Road, Motherwell.

The exhibition will be held in The Moorings Hotel on Hamilton Road from noon to 5pm on Friday, August 19, and 10am to 3pm on Saturday, August 20.

Over 200 people attended the first round of public exhibitions in April with 80 per cent in support of the proposals, but the general feeling was the location of the store site was not right.

Sainsbury’s has amended the proposals so the store is now located on the western part of the site, further away from residential properties. The plans also now include a petrol filling station.

The store will provide up to 300 job opportunities, representing a significant employment boost to Motherwell and the wider North Lanarkshire economy.

Paul Miller, Sainsbury’s development surveyor, said: “We believe we have addressed the key concerns from the first round of consultation and we look forward to discussing the new plans with the community.”
