Once again Times and Speaker readers have risen to the challenge with donations pouring in for our annual Christmas Present Appeal.

We launched the appeal, run in conjunction with the Salvation Army and Asda, last week to gather Christmas gifts for distribution to babies, children and teenagers from families in need throughout our circulation area.

And once again - as we knew you would - our readers have been terrific in their response.

Among them is Bellshill charity fundraiser Ray Mitchell who has donated a pile of toys from the ‘Christmas grotto’ in her bedroom.

Since October Ray has been buying presents for our appeal from the proceeds of her weekly raffle sales in Bellshill post office.

She said; “Christmas is a time of year to think of people who are less fortunate and particularly children.

“That’s why I am always delighted to support the Times & Speaker appeal and I would just like to thank all my customers for buying raffle tickets and making this donation possible.”

Our appeal, which is also collecting presents for older people so that everyone in our community can experience the joy the festive season brings, runs until Friday, December 13, and donations can be dropped off to our office at 29 Hope Street, Motherwell ML1 1BT. They can also be left at collection points in the Asda Motherwell store.

Donations should be new and unwrapped and don’t need to be expensive. Gift ideas include soft toys, dolls and action figures, books, suitable CDs and DVDs, art sets, jigsaws, board games and puzzles.

Clothes, including socks and underwear, as well as winter accessories such as hats and scarves will also be gratefully received and items such as toiletries, diaries and calendars, chocolates and biscuits are great gifts for older people.

And if your group, office or school has a donation then let us know on 01698 242553 and we can arrange a suitable photocall.
