A POSTMAN stole thousands of letters and packages, and stashed them in his Motherwell home.
Darrin Ferguson (40) of Birrens Road, kept bundles of letters, cards and parcels over a four-year period. He blamed a bad back for not delivering the mail.
At Hamilton Sheriff Court this week, Ferguson admitted theft of the postal packages between October 2008 and June last year. He was ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work within six months.
Ferguson, a postman for around 10 years, is well known in fishing circles in the west of Scotland and has won several competitions.
Suspicion fell on him when he was spotted removing mail from his locker at the sorting office in Motherwell. A search of his home uncovered stacks of undelivered letters.
Ferguson said he had back problems and was struggling with the load.
