Holyrood contenders named in full for Motherwell and Wishaw/Uddingston and Bellshill

This newspaper is now in a position to name all the first-past-the post candidates for the Holyrood elections within the two constituencies we cover – after the closing date for candidates elapsed last Wednesday (March 31)

In one case, there are seven contenders to pick from as is the case in Motherwell and Wishaw but in Uddingston and Bellshill there are just four.

The candidates for Motherwell and Wishaw are as follows – Clare Adamson, Scottish National Party, Daniel Lambe - Communist Party of Britain, Mark Meechan - Scottish Libertarian Party, Martine Nolan - Scottish Labour Party, Martin Veart - Scottish Liberal Democrats, Nathan Wilson - Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party and Neil Wilson, UK Independence Party.

The candidates for Uddingston and Bellshill are as follows- Dawn Marion Ferguson Allan - Scottish Liberal Democrats, Stephanie Callaghan – Scottish National Party, Brian Flannagan – Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party and Frank McNally, Scottish Labour.

There were calls by the Labour group at North Lanarkshire Council for the election which takes place on Thursday May 6 to be called off because of the pandemic.

However, special measures will be in place to ensure that social distancing can be observed within polling stations – in moves already put in place during the long-awaited by-election in the Thorniewood ward last month.

Voters are reminded that they must be registered to vote by Monday, April 19.
