Grass cutting row continues after North Lanarkshire Council now blames SNP

The controversial decision to stop honouring a decades-old agreement to cut grass on land the council does not own has sparked further complaints against the local authority – but now its leader has blamed another party for the set-up.

Last week, the council would only provide the briefest of comments as to why the service had stopped, confirming the news that it had ceased.

But now, Councillor Jim Logue has taken the step of expanding on the issue after complaints continued to pour in following our coverage last week of the dwindling state of a neighbourhood in Uddingston.

The situation has also been highlighted in our sister papers within the authority after residents in a neighbourhood in Cumbernauld launched an identical complaint.

At this point, the Labour man said: “With £300m of cuts to North Lanarkshire’s budget since 2007, there are many things that the council has traditionally done which are no longer possible. Cutting grassed areas which are exclusively in private ownership is now one of them. I fully understand residents’ frustrations at this, however blame must solely lie at the feet of the SNP Government in Edinburgh who have continuously passed on catastrophic cuts to our council for the last 14 years.

“I have said for years that cuts to councils are cuts to communities and regrettably residents are now starting to see exactly what that means for them in their own communities.”
