Care home plan goes before Government
A planning application to build a care home in Bothwell has been appealed to the Scottish Government after South Lanarkshire Council failed to make a decision.
Balmer Developments, which runs care homes in Viewpark and Uddingston, wants to demolish a Victorian villa on Hamilton Road, and replace it with a new 61-room facility.
The 1.6m three storey home would cover an area of 5000 sq m and employ 120 people, the plans include 29 parking spaces, a cinema and hairdressing salon.
The council received dozens of objections and a 156-signature petition after the application was submitted last spring with concerns expressed about traffic problems and the breaching of conservation area regulations, one nearby resident branding the proposal a “monstrosity”.
No decision was delivered by the council within three months of the deadline and after it failed to adequately respond to a plea for a time extension Balmer was given the go-ahead to turn to Holyrood for a resolution.
A Government reporter will now be appointed and is expected to make a decision following a site visit later this year.
