A patriotic youngster at a Bellshill primary school is enjoying St Andrew’s Day in style today, after sending a letter to his headteacher pleading for the day off.
Andrew Ewing, who attends St Gerard’s PS, penned an adorable note making his case for the time off to mark the day of his patron saint namesake.
Sadly for Andrew, his request was declined, but headteacher Ian Conaghan was so impressed with the seven-year-old’s efforts that he granted an ‘extra long playtime’ for Andrew and his P3/4 classmates, as well as an extended lunch break.
In his response, Mr Conaghan praised Andrew for his ‘courteous and polite letter’ and noted that he was ‘super impressed’ that he had consulted with parish priest Fr Kevin McGoldrick on the matter.
Mr Conaghan said: “I found the letter on my desk last Monday morning and thought it was a super letter from a lovely little boy in our school.
“I called his mum to discuss how we could satisfy some of his request and delighted to help him out.
“We are all very proud of Andrew and it only goes to show that sometimes you only have to ask.
“His mother told him not to get his hopes up and that he may get a disappointing letter back.
“His response to his mum was ‘Believe’.”
