A Motherwell army veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan was “deeply honoured” to play the pipes at a special 65th birthday ceremony for Prince Charles.

Lance Corporal Scott Slaven, pictured, is a member of the pipes and drums of The Royal Scots Borderers, part of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, and played during a display at Edinburgh Castle which also featured an ear-splitting 21-gun salute.

The former Braidhurst High School pupil, engaged to Motherwell woman Christina Hart, has served all over the world since he joined the army in 2002.

His active service life involves more than playing the pipes, as all members of the pipes and drums are assault pioneers within the battalion.

The unit is based at Dreghorn Barracks in Edinburgh.
