WORK has finally started on the new park and ride facility being built in Bellshill town centre.
The £460,000 project at Hamilton Road - next to the site formerly occupied by the British Legion social club - will provide 160 car park spaces for people using Bellshill rail station, and is being funded by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT).
The plan to build the facility was first unveiled last year, but the project was delayed when work on the site revealed contaminated material.
However it has now been cleared and the first sod was cut last week with the project expected to be completed by November.
The new facility is intended to compliment the decision taken in 2009 to choose Bellshill, rather than Uddingston, as a stopping point for a new hourly express train service between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh launched in December that year.
It is also hoped that it will ease pressure for parking spaces elsewhere in ther town centre.
