The authority is considering proposals to open the members’ car park at the Civic Centre, within walking distance of Fir Park Stadium.

The move will be trialled for Motherwell’s final home game of the season against St Johnstone on Saturday, May 7.

If successful, it will be implemented on a permanent basis from next season, and also be open to ease parking pressures during events at Motherwell Concert Hall.

The car park, which has a capacity for approximately 60 cars, is currently not used in the evenings or at weekends.

The move was suggested by North Lanarkshire’s new Education Convener, Councillor Frank McNally.

He said: “I have been going to Fir Park for over 20 years and there have always been issues with parking.

“Hopefully this increase in parking capacity will become a permanent fixture for all home games next season.

“I am also pleased that the car park will be opened for those attending events at Motherwell Concert Hall outwith council working hours.

“Although this will not resolve all the problems, it will make life easier for local residents and drivers.”

Motherwell’s General Manager Alan Burrows added: “We would like to thank Councillor McNally, along with the leader and the chief executive for opening up the members’ car park for public use on match days.

“Parking in and around Fir Park Stadium, which is surrounded by predominately residential properties, has always been a challenge, and this addition of these 60 spaces, no more than a few minutes from the stadium itself, will be a huge boost and will hopefully ease congestion.”
