AN innovative new telephone scheme which offers vital support to older people in South Lanarkshire has now gone live.

Older People’s Champion, Councillor Pam Clearie, made the first caring call for Good Morning South Lanarkshire on Friday.

A team of eight young telephonists will now hit the phone lines every morning from Monday to Friday to check that older people throughout the area, especially those at risk of isolation, are safe and well.

The Voluntary Action South Lanarkshire (VASLan) pilot scheme, part of its Reshaping Care for Older People (RCOP) agenda, supports key agencies, carers and families by acting as an early warning system if there are any issues.

Councillor Clearie said: Some people don’t feel comfortable letting someone into their house to check up on them, but a phone call is different.

“A wee chat sometimes makes all the difference. For some people, this will be the only communication they’ve got.”
