Motherwell could be set for its very own version of the world’s most popular board game.
To celebrate the 80th anniversary of Monopoly, six towns are in the running to be featured in the game.
Motherwell is up against St Andrews, Stirling, Perth, Ayr and Falkirk, after the Scottish shortlist was whittled down from an original 20 which stretched from Dumfries to Stornaway.
One location is guaranteed to ‘Pass Go’ and land its’ very own Monopoly board later this year which will be made by Winning Moves UK under license from Monopoly owners Hasbro.
The board will showcase 22 property landmarks from the winning location with other features including the four train stations from the London original being handed over to a ‘travel’ theme.
Many of the Chance and Community Chest playing cards will be customised too.
Winning Moves UK chief executive Jamie Lamont said: “The factors that will decide the winner are two-fold - firstly, and crucially, the strength of popular feeling and pride for a particular city or town. Secondly, the diversity and beauty of potential landmarks to fill the board.
“So it’s in effect a beauty contest – to borrow a famous Monopoly phrase. The only difference is there is no prize for coming second, just first.”
Motherwell West councillor Michael Ross, a founder member of Lanarkshire Gamers, believes getting a Monopoly board would be good for the town.
He said: “Monopoly is an excellent game and anything that brings families together, not just ignoring each other while using computers or phones, has to be a good thing.
“The publicity Motherwell would get if it were to win the vote would be a good thing and I would be thrilled if it happened.
“Board games are becoming more and more popular, with year on year sales exploding.
“We started Lanarkshire Gamers with six people meeting once a month four years ago and now have around 30 meeting in Motherwell on the first and third Saturday of every month.
“Board games are a lot of fun and I would encourage everyone to cast their vote for Motherwell so we win and get our very own version of Monopoly.”
