A Motherwell legal firm has once again been named one of the biggest criminal defence teams in Scotland.
Bruce the Lawyers was paid nearly £1.2 million in legal aid fees during 2014-15, making it the seventh biggest earner in the country. It moves up one place from 2013-14.
On criminal legal aid only, Bruce was the highest earner in the west of Scotland and fourth in Scotland. Its nearest Lanarkshire rival, Airdrie-based Manini Belardo Matteo, earned only a third of its total.
Director Diarmid Bruce said: “This is a results-driven business and people see how hard we try to secure a favourable outcome for every client we represent.
“We are proud to be the biggest criminal legal aid firm in the west of Scotland and happy we have improved again.”
Bruce the Lawyer’s income went up despite legal aid payments falling eight per cent in Scotland and the firm’s case costs being lower than the national average.
The firm started as a two-man business but now, including Mr Bruce, there are nine solicitors plus solicitor-advocate Rhonda Anderson who works exclusively for the firm. It also has offices in Airdrie and Glasgow.
