Man avoids jail for assaults on boys

A former Motherwell man has avoided jail after assaulting two young boys at a flat in the Muirhouse area of the town.

Richard Shannan (37), now of Rannoch Drive, Wishaw, was found guilty at Hamilton Sheriff Court of punching a boy of eight on the body and striking him repeatedly on the body. He was also convicted of punching a six-year-old boy repeatedly on the body. He had denied the charges.

The assaults happened between January 1 and May 10 this year.

Sheriff Ray Small ordered Shannan to be supervised for one year and told him he must carry out 200 hours of unpaid work within six months.

The sheriff warned him the community payback order was an alternative to a prison sentence and he must comply with its terms.
