The people of North Lanarkshire have been thanked for ‘entrusting’ the SNP with their vote as the party celebrates sweeping general election victories.
Former Labour strongholds of Motherwell and Wishaw, Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill, and Airdrie and Shotts fell to the Nationalists as did Lanark and Hamilton East - which includes Uddingston and Bothwell.
Members of Uddingston and Bellshill SNP branch celebrated in the early hours after the count at Ravenscraig.
Branch chairman and Central Scotland MSP Richard Lyle said: “The people of Scotland have spoken and none more so than here in North Lanarkshire where our people have entrusted the Scottish National Party with their vote.
“I’d like to thank all of our SNP activists for their sheer determination and hard work in this election. In the Uddingston and Bellshill area alone we hand delivered more than 200,000 pieces of campaign literature in this election and knocked on many doors.
“I want to say thank you to local people for entrusting us with their vote. The SNP will work to ensure the people of Scotland’s voice is heard at Westminster whilst playing a constructive part in ending austerity, championing job creation and ensuring that the powers promised to Scotland during the referendum are delivered in full.”
More election reaction to follow online and in next week’s Times & Speaker, out on Wednesday.
