A man who assaulted a police officer after being caught with a knife in Bellshill has been jailed for 21 months at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

Sheriff Shiona Waldron told John O’Neill (32) his record, which includes convictions for carrying blades, was “truly appalling”.

O’Neill, a prisoner, admitted having a knife and headbutting and threatening a police officer while on bail in Belvidere Crescent on April 22.

The sheriff expressed concern he had been caught with a blade on a public footpath at 5pm.

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce said his client has mental health problems but had found a job after being freed from jail last year.
