A tireless volunteer who was awarded the MBE for his community work in Motherwell’s Muirhouse area has died aged 82.
Hugh McCann was at the heart of many activities at the Isa Money Centre and organised fundraising events for both St Brendan’s Church and St Margaret’s Church.
His commitment to the area never wavered despite losing a leg some years ago and it was only recently that ill health curtailed his activity.
North Lanarkshire councillor Michael Ross said Motherwell ‘has lost a true legend’.
Former councillor Gerry McLaughlin added: “Hugh is a big loss and will be a hard act to follow. He helped run the lunch club at the Isa Money Centre and was always looking out for people, even if it meant getting meals delivered to them.”
Hugh’s funeral was at St Brendan’s Church on Monday this week.
