Guides celebrate milestone birthday

SIXTH Motherwell Guide Unit started their 90th anniversary celebrations by travelling to the outdoor activity centre at Lockerbie Manor.

The weekend was partly funded by a grant from Awards for All and adventurous activities included blind trail, low ropes, high ropes, zip wire, crate stacking, obstacle course, wide game, fencing and scavenger hunt.

The girls’ favourite activity was crate stacking followed closely by the high ropes course.

Two of the young Guiders, Laura Westwood and Rowan Simpson, were brave enough to attempt the zip wire and the crate stacking.

After watching them, brown owl Doreen Barclay decided to give it a go and took off down the zip wire to the encouraging shouts of the Guides, some had previously been in her Brownies.

The girls and leaders were accommodated in en-suite rooms and had all meals provided, giving the Guiders a more leisurely weekend than is the norm at Guide residential events.

On Saturday, January 12, an anniversary dinner will be held in St Mary’s Parish Church, Motherwell, with new flags being dedicated at morning service the next day.

The present company would like as many former girls and leaders of the unit to join them to celebrate this special occasion.
