A WORKER at a garage in Bellshill was killed in a tragic accident at the premises last week.

Sandy Haining died after he was trapped between a quad bike and a wall at the Brigbrae Garage in Calder Road.

It’s understood that the 33-year-old paint sprayer was driving the machine out of the forecourt of the garage last Thursday morning when he accidentally accelerated into the wall instead of reversing.

Mr Haining, from Wishaw, was rushed to Wishaw General Hospital but died there a short time later.

He is survived by his fiancee Claire Anderson and their month-old daughter Katie.

Health and Safety Executive have been informed and a full report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

A number of floral tributes were left at the garage which closed over the weekend as a mark of respect.

Mr Haining was a member of Craigneuk True Defenders and a former member of the Bellshill Imperial Flute Band and was due to take part in the Craigneuk band’s parade in Wishaw last Friday night.

The parade went ahead with the band walking in his honour as a mark of respect.

A number of tributes to Sandy were posted on Facebook by family members and friends.

One contributor to the Craigneuk True Defenders page wrote: “Perhaps one of the hardest times I’ve ever played wae (sic) the band tonight.

“Each and every member filled with emotion as we walked down the street. Was touching to see the Bellshill Imperial lining the street as we marched into the car park.

“Think this is a friendship forged by sorrow but a friendship that will last forever.

“I hope you were watching Sandy and were smiling down on us tonight.

“Sleep well my friend till we meet again.”
