MOTHERWELL & Wishaw MP Frank Roy heard first hand about the 11-year civil war in Sierra Leone from former child soldier Hassan Kamara.
Frank met Hassan during a visit to Scotia Aid - Sierra Leone in Bellshill, a charity launched in 2010 with the objective of improving the educational and learning opportunities of children and young people in the African country.
Sierra Leone suffered a brutal 11-year war which ended in 2002 and has had a lasting and devastating impact on its young people.
Frank said: “I was delighted to visit Scotia Aid and meet the hugely dedicated and excellent team.
“They all do a wonderful job in the many projects all across Sierra Leone with the aim of trying to help the children and young people who have suffered so greatly.
“It was extremely moving to hear Hassan recount his own personal experiences of the brutal war that ravaged his country and the terrible ordeal he suffered after being kidnapped.
“I would urge all local residents to get in touch if they can help in any way, whether through donations or just some of your time.”
