A family have been left heartbroken after one of their cherished dogs was knocked down and killed by a car and the other was badly injured.

The Thompsons’ grief is mixed with anger as the callous driver stopped only briefly before driving away.

Mum Kirsteen is appealing for the motorist to come forward and help police investigating the crash.

She said: “I can’t believe someone would drive off after something like this- it could have been a person hit by the car.”

The crash happened yards from the family’s home in Coursington Gardens, Motherwell, late last Wednesday night.

Dad David had let collie cross Molly (4) and three-year-old Marley out to the garden before bedtime. The couple believe the dogs spotted a fox and jumped over the wall before running on to Coursington Road where they were hit.

Molly died soon after and Marley suffered multiple pelvic fractures, but is expected to make a good recovery over time.
