Richard Cross had planned to visit the cafe run by the Bethany Christian Trust at Motherwell Baptist Church on February 28.

However, due to the weather the cafe was closed as none of the volunteers were able to get there, Richard feared he was stuck with no way to get home until Charles appeared.

Charles revealed in last week’s Times & Speaker he was driving home from the gym after that night’s Aberdeen game was cancelled when he picked up several people and got them home safely as “it was just a nice thing to do”.

Richard was delighted to be one of them and asked community development worker Gillian Falconer to pass on his thanks.

She said: “Richard has come to our cafe since it opened and had turned up that morning, but we couldn’t open as it was impossible for the volunteers who run it to get there.

“My daughter loves Motherwell and follows Charles on Instagram, she knows Richard really well as she collects coins and he shares his old ones with her and she recognised him on Charles’s Instagram post although it doesn’t show you his face.

“I wrote to Charles to thank him on Richard’s behalf and he replied that Richard was miles away from home and he was glad to have been able to give him a lift.

“It’s a lovely story of community and an act of kindness for people who could do nothing in return for Charles.”

The cafe is open to everyone every Wednesday from 10am-2pm and Friday from 11am-2pm, and the food is free.
