Villagers are getting the chance to comment on plans to upgrade Newarthill Wood.

The North Lanarkshire Council-owned land lies close to Newarthill Primary School and houses.

Proposals include improving paths, thinning trees and new planting.

The plans will go on display at Newarthill Community Education Centre tomorrow (Thursday) from 4pm to 8pm.

The council says its efforts have in the past been hampered by fireraising and vandalism. The main path allows ‘excellent’ views to the south, but has ‘serious problems’ with litter, broken glass and bonfire remains.

It wants to encourage more people to the use the paths and intends to improve entrances to the area and install signs. It suggests ground could be used for outdoor education.

Newarthill councillor Peter Nolan said: “This could be a fantastic area along the lines of Riccard Johnston in New Stevenston. I would like as many people as possible to go along to the consultation and make their views known.”
