‘Decent’ dad jailed for shop robbery

A ‘polite and decent’ dad of six has been jailed for robbing a Motherwell newsagent’s.

Brian Rankin pretended to a terrified 16-year-old female assistant that he had a knife before grabbing £252 from the till at J&J in Merry Street.

The robber failed in a plea for freedom last week after claiming that he thought the shop was empty and had not planned to use violence.

Rankin (41), of Wallbrae Road, Cumbernauld, was jailed for 15 months at Hamilton Sheriff Court. He admitted pushing and threatening the assistant, pretending he had a weapon, demanding money and stealing the cash in September 2010.

Rankin was living in a homeless unit in Motherwell at the time.

Defence agent Robert Brown said his client’s criminal record was ‘limited’ and he had developed a heroin addiction at a relatively late stage.
