A young man is due in court today after the death of an 18-year-old in Uddingston at the weekend.

The body of Sean Banks, from Viewpark, was found on North British Road, near the M74 underpass, just after midnight on Saturday.

Police said a male, also 18, has been arrested. He is due to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court later today (Monday).

Police said Mr Banks might have been involved in a ‘confrontation’ with a group of youths near the entrance to St John the Baptist Primary School.

They were studying CCTV from the surrounding area.

Detectives also believed that an ‘altercation’ involving Mr Banks in Porters Well, Uddingston, earlier might have been linked to the disturbance in North British Road.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Boyd appealed for witnesses to come forward, saying teenage school pupils might have vital information.

He said: “Sean’s family has been left devastated and it’s imperative we establish how this young man died.

“I believe that some of the young people involved may be students at local high schools and I am appealing directly to these young people to get in touch with us, whatever they know or may have seen.”

Anyone with information was asked to call the police non-emergency number, 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
