Craig Warnock was told that only the fact he was a first offender had saved him from a prison sentence.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard he swore at the doctor and warned him: “If you touch me I’ll headbutt you.”

Warnock (27), of McLees Lane, Motherwell, admitted threatening behaviour at his home, Wishaw General Hospital and Motherwell police station on March 13. He also admitted resisting arrest and trying to butt a police officer.

He was taken to hospital after getting what defence agent Diarmid Bruce said was a “nasty” wound when his head hit the side of a police car door as he was being arrested.

Mr Bruce, who produced a photograph of the injury, said Warnock had been knocked unconscious and blamed his conduct in the hospital on concussion and his “aggrieved” state of mind.

Sheriff Vincent Smith fined Warnock £1,250 and imposed a four-month tagging order which bans him from leaving home at night.

The sheriff told him: “All members of the community, particularly police and hospital staff, have the right to go to work without suffering abuse.

“Your behaviour in A&E was completely unacceptable and the suggestion it can be explained by a head wound incurred due to your drunkenness is derisory.”
