A 28-year-old man required hospital treatment after being attacked in Bellshill on Sunday night.
Police say the man appears to have been the victim of an unprovoked attack, which took place near the taxi rank on Glebe Street around 9.45pm.
The victim was punched to the ground where he was repeatedly kicked and punched, suffering facial injuries as a result.
The suspect is described as being white, aged 20 to 25, with short blonde hair and wearing a white polo shirt with a silver design on the front, blue jeans and white trainers.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to call Police Scotland on 101.
