MSP Margaret Mitchell has called for action from the Scottish Government to tackle the issue of legal highs.

Mrs Mitchell, Conservative list MSP for Central Scotland, said recent figures showed there were 323 admissions to Scottish accident and emergency units of people taking legal highs since 2009 - and that the NHS Lanarkshire area has seen 13 deaths from legal highs since 2011.

And she said the problem appeared to be worsening with 139 admissions in 2013 alone - more than double that of any previous year.

She said: “This is clearly a problem that is getting worse and a plan of action is required to tackle it. Even from these statistics it’s obvious the issue is becoming more prevalent.

“It’s important both the Scottish Government and the NHS are ahead of the game to ensure these admissions figures can come down.”
