Police are trying to trace a brave female customer they believe foiled an armed robbery at a Polish supermarket in Motherwell.

The woman had popped in to buy groceries when she got caught up in the Wednesday morning drama.

A youth allegedly brandished a knife at a female member of staff and demanded money.

The customer - believed to be Polish - confronted the would-be robber and her intervention led to him fleeing empty-handed.

However, the woman left the supermarket before the police arrived and they don’t know who she is as she didn’t leave any contact details behind.

The incident happened around 10.25 on Wednesday at Polski Supermarket in Merry Street.

Detective Constable Mark Cummings appealed for the woman to come forward.

He said: “This female, who is possibly Polish, showed great courage in getting involved without consideration for her own safety.

“I am looking to trace and speak with her as soon as possible.”

DC Cummings wants the woman, or anyone who knows who she is, to call him at Wishaw police station on 01698 202660.

A 15-year-old male was detained in connection with the attempted robbery. He was released by detectives subsequently and is expected to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court in due course.
