A Motherwell firm of solicitors has become the biggest earner of criminal legal aid in the west of Scotland - and fourth biggest in Scotland.

Bruce McCormack Limited, also known as Bruce the Lawyers, posted a massive 22 per cent rise in income last year and puts the success down to its ‘fearless’ defence of clients’ interests in the courts.

The Merry Street-based firm, which also has a Glasgow office, earned £1,177,800 in 2013-14, up from £962,900 the previous year.

Last year it was the sixth biggest criminal legal aid earner in the country and in moving up it overtakes Renfrewshire-based McCusker McElroy and Gallanagh as top in the west of Scotland.

Scullion Law was the second highest earner in Lanarkshire with £454,920 - around 38 per cent of the Bruce McCormack figure.

The huge increase comes despite overall payments to solicitors by the Scottish Legal Aid Board rising by just 1.7 per cent.

Sole director Diarmid Bruce, whose firm sponsors local boxing clubs and a dance school, said: “I believe much of our success is down to being seen to defend our clients’ interests fearlessly and responding rapidly to requests for assistance.

“We started 12 years ago as a two-solicitor practice and now have seven solicitors plus solicitor-advocate Rhonda Anderson who acts as a consultant principally in High Court cases.

“I’m delighted with our progress, but being so busy means a lot of hard work and very long hours!”
