POLICE in Bellshill have warned staff at betting shops in the area to be on their guard following a second robbery at a bookmakers in the town inside a week.

A three-figure sum of cash was stolen following an armed raid on the Ladbrokes shop at 28 Hamilton Road, next to Franklyn’s pub, last Tuesday night.

The raid happened less than a week after a similar robbery at the firm’s other Hamilton Road shop, next to The Orb pub.

Although both robberies took place around the same time of night and involved two suspects in each case, police are keeping an open mind on whether the two are linked.

However, following the raids, officers have visited all betting shops in the Bellshill sub-division to offer security advice to staff in the case the area is being particularly targeted.

Area commander Chief Inspector Angus McPhail said: “We have had community officers visit all the licenced betting premises in the area to offer advice.

“This is something which we do on a regular basis anyway, but given the two recent incidents we thought it sensible to offer reassurance and advise staff on how to heighten their awareness of who is in their shop and what actions to take.”

Last Tuesday’s robbery took place around 8pm when two armed males entered the premises and made threats to the two members of staff inside - a 41-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man.

No-one else, either staff or customers, were in the premises at the time and the suspects made off with a three figure sum. Both members of staff were unhurt but shaken by their ordeal.

The suspects wore dark clothing and had covered faces. Anyone with information should contact Bellshill CID on 202400.
