A Bellshill man who helped a prisoner on the run to avoid capture has been jailed for five months at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

Michael McInnes was found at Sean Feeney’s Bellshill home after a 10-day manhunt, the court was told.

Feeney (21), of Shirrel Avenue, admitted attempting to defeat the ends of justice and failing to turn up at court for a pre-trial hearing last month.

McInnes, who is from Bellshill, is serving six years for attempted murder. He failed to return to Castle Huntly Prison, near Dundee, after a home visit in December.

More than a dozen officers arrived at Feeney’s home after a tip-off and the door was forced in.

Defence agent Jim O’Dowd said Feeney had fallen asleep after drinking and was unaware at first that a group of friends, including McInnes, had come into his home.

He claimed the fugitive was present for less than an hour before the police arrived.

Sheriff David Bicket backdated the five-month stretch to May 16 as Feeney has been in jail since then after his arrest for failing to turn up at court.
