An investigation has been launched after a woman was sexually assaulted in Motherwell.

The 20-year-old was walking on Kirkland Street around 9.15pm last Tuesday (May 13) when she was grabbed and attacked.

The culprit ran off in the direction of North Orchard Street, while the woman managed to flag down a passing police car to raise the alarm.

The suspect is described as aged 17 or 18, of heavy build with hair that is spiky on top and shaved in at the sides. He was wearing a grey jumper, light blue baggy jeans and white trainers.

Police have been carrying out door to door enquiries and searching CCTV footage.

PC John Houston, dealing with the enquiry, said: “Understandably the woman has been left extremely shaken as a result of this incident, but thankfully she has been left otherwise uninjured.

“We’re continuing extensive enquiries into tracing the suspect responsible for this frightening incident.

“It is imperative we trace the person responsible and I am hopeful that there may have been some passers-by or motorists who may be able to help with our enquiry.”
