An Uddingston couple who lost their stillborn baby daughter at birth have raised an incredible £22,500 for charity in her memory.

Gary and Rebecca McBain say that while nothing will ever make up for their loss, they wanted to create a fitting legacy of baby Lily.

The couple held a variety of events and raised £6,000 for the neonatal unit at Wishaw General and £10,500 for the stillbirth and neonatal death charity Glasgow SANDS,

Rebecca said: “Our beautiful baby Lily was born at home at 40 weeks and three days.

“We had absolutely no idea anything was wrong until she was born. It totally devastated us and our entire family.

“We will never get over losing Lily who was absolutely perfect. There is no way to describe the anticipation of having a baby, looking forward to life as a family only to have it snatched away and having to go home alone.

“Luckily Gary and I had the support of our amazing family and friends who helped us to cope. Our friends suggested we hold a Ball for Lily and this really gave us something to focus on.”

Gary added: “We will never get over losing Lily, we will always remember her and feel that fundraising will help create a legacy in her memory.

“We are overwhelmed with how much money we have raised and at the generosity of people and businesses who have have donated prizes and money. We hope that the money raised will go some way to helping other couples through the terrible pain of losing their precious baby.”

Sheila Miller, ward manager for the neonatal unit, said: “The generosity and spirit of Gary and Rebecca is really awe-inspiring. The funds will be used to purchase ‘Lily’s Cuddle Chair’, which will allow parents to safely hold their babies in the neonatal unit while they are still attached to hospital equipment.”
