Could it be magic . . .

A LANARKSHIRE card magician has set his sights on Las Vegas after winning his first competition.

Chris Dougall (17) recently won the under-18s category at Edinburgh’s International Magic Festival, also known as MagicFest.

The former Coltness High pupil, who has lived in Motherwell but now stays in Hamilton, was encouraged to enter the contest by his dad Kenneth who has watched him show off his tricks since the age of eight.

The die-hard Motherwell FC fan is amazingly self taught, learning his tricks from DVDs, and is already impressing his magician peers with his slight of hand magic skills.

As part of his prize for winning the contest, Chris will be mentored by the festival director Kevin McMahon over the next year while he studies music at Motherwell College.

But he hopes to eventually embark on the mecca of magic that is Las Vegas.

Dad Kenneth said: “No one has ever seen anyone as good as Chris at slight of hand magic.

“This mentoring opportunity is great for him and he hopes it will eventually lead to him getting the chance to go to Las Vegas.”

In the meantime, Chris has been building up his confidence by doing various shows including one with Motherwell FC legend Stevie Kirk on one of the club’s hospitality days.

And with the support of his family including brother Robert (20), it wont be long until he is performing those same tricks on a much bigger stage.

Dad Kenneth added: “His confidence is growing and he is getting better.”

Kevin McMahon, artistic director, said: “Chris is an enthusiastic and very talented card magician.

“His performance in the MagicFest competition was well delivered, funny and very magical.

“He has great potential to become a skilled and popular professional performer, and I’m delighted to be able to offer my help and guidance to him as part of the prize.”
