Basics Food Bank Lanarkshire’s storage facility in Motherwell has had a revamp with help from GRAHAM Construction.

As part of the firm’s commitment to the local community as it builds the new Wishaw Health Centre, GRAHAM approached the food bank to see if there were renovations or work it could do.

The offer was met with open arms and GRAHAM has since carried out joinery work and renovated wear and tear areas within the building, located in Motherwell Business Centre.

Internal doors have been renewed and vents and grills have been refreshed as part of the process, additional lighting and a replacement front door have been added to make the food bank safer and more secure and the entrance also has new flooring to give it a refreshed, brighter feel.

David Shaw, manager from Basics Food Bank Lanarkshire, said: “We would like to commend GRAHAM Construction on the high quality of workmanship it carried out at our storage and office premises.

“These essential works were completed free of charge, allowing us to focus our resources on meeting the ever growing demand for the service the charity provides.”

The organisation operates four food banks in North Lanarkshire, located in Wishaw, Motherwell, Airdrie and Bellshill.

They gave out nearly five tonnes of food in January, including 214 food parcels, which assisted 68 families and fed approximately 328 people, all through the generous giving of the local people.

Site operatives and apprentices from GRAHAM worked on the food bank, backed up by sub-contractors on the health centre.

Stephen O’Connell, project manager at GRAHAM Construction, said: “It was a great opportunity to give something back to the community by working on the food bank.

“The staff at the food bank do a great job and our aim was to give the building a new lease of life and make it is as secure and comfortable as possible.”

Work on the new health centre in Wishaw is set to be completed in late August/early September and it will open soon after, providing a range of services including healthcare facilities, a GP practice, a dental practice and community dental facilities.

The centre will also include multi-purpose meeting rooms and bookable clinic service rooms, the new North Lanarkshire Council library, First Stop Shop and Bank and the housing office.
