The Co-operative Food has decided to abandon plans to open a new store in Motherwell.

Following an appeal to Scottish Ministers last year the firm were granted planning permission to renovate the inside of the former Halfords building in Manse Road.

However with Tesco set to take up a lease for an Express across the road in Windmillhill Street, and the opening of Aldi in West Hamilton Street, the Co-op has decided not to move forward with their plans.

A spokesperson for The Co-operative Food said: “Unfortunately we are now unable to proceed with plans for a convenience store in Manse Road, Motherwell.

“Since getting planning permission other retailers have opened stores nearby and, as a result, we have reluctantly decided that a new Co-operative Food store would no longer be viable in that location.”
