POLICE are warning of a new scam to have hit the North Lanarkshire area.
Officers have received reports of members of the public being called by bogus salespeople and coaxed into handing over money in return for a pay out.
PC Alan Mulholland, community safety officer based in Bellshill, said: “We are aware of a scam which seems to be happening by telephone in the North Lanarkshire area.
“The reports we have received would suggest that members of the public have been cold called and spoken to by males or females.
“They are then requested to make deposits in return for a payment protection hand out.”
He added: “If you receive a call asking for money up front in return for a pay out, then this will be a con.
“Only people who initiate a claim against a company who have mis-sold them the insurance will be able to carry out an enquiry to see if they were mis-sold it. You should never have anyone calling you direct telling you how much you are owed.
“If you have any doubt about anyone calling you then take as much detail as possible and contact the financial ombudsman at firstname.lastname@example.org, call your local police office or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
