WORK to restore a historic organ in a Motherwell church can now get underway after funding was secured.

Dalziel St Andrew’s Church got £15,000 from the Pilgrim Trust which boosted money gained from the Environmental Key Fund and Heritage Lottery Fund. There has also been fundraising by the congregation.

A German company, Walcker and Son, has been awarded the contract by the church’s property committee to restore the organ which has a British Institute of Organ Studies Certificate Grade 1 award.

Walcker and Son manufactured the organ in the first place and a spokesman for the church said: “Gerhard Walcker has visited the church twice to inspect the organ and confirms its special significance in the musical world.”
