A Motherwell man who spent more than 20 years helping underprivileged and disabled people in Romania has died.
Hugh Ferguson and his wife Maureen originally set up the Clann Sona Romania Appeal from a spare room in their house in 1990.
They made their first of 45 trips to Romania in 1992 and over the years the charity grew, operating a shop in Merry Street, Motherwell, and a warehouse in New Stevenston.
The couple’s reach also grew as they also began helping people across eatern Europe, Africa and Sri Lanka.
In 2012 the charity offically closed its Merry Street base due to a lack of funding.
However, that didn’t stop Hugh and Maureen and as recently as 2014 travelled to Romania to aid The Fundatia Excelsior and the Speranta Special Needs Club.
Hugh passed away peacefully at Wishaw General Hospital last month.
