Cash-strapped club votes to go it alone

Fir Park Social Club will remain in the hands of the membership after they decided not to bring an outside investor on board.

The Edward Street club held an extraordinary general meeting, attended by around 200 members, on Monday night which heard from an investor who offered a ‘peppercorn’ lease.

This would have seen them taking over the running of the club but left ownership in the hands of the members.

However, this proposal was outvoted in favour of the membership retaining full control and a new committee was elected.

Members of the new committee have been promoting a positive message to members on the Fir Park Social Club Facebook page.

Christeen MacMurdie said: “A new, positive committee is in place who are all singing off the same hymn sheet.

“I feel big, positive changes around the corner.”

Tommy Smith added: “It’s up to us to promote the club correctly and somehow try to get many more people through our doors.

“We have had nothing but good luck messages so all we want to do is get on and turn the club around once and for all.”
