Asda have pulled the plug on plans to build a new supermarket in Viewpark.
The company confirmed to the Times and Speaker this week that they will not be going ahead with plans to build the store in Laburnum Road.
The store had been expected to create 200 new jobs and result in improved community facilities to replace lost pitches at Laburnum Road.
But as Asda spokesperson said: “The way customers shop has changed at a more pronounced pace in the last five years than in the last 20 years put together.
“Unfortunately, this means the plans we started to put in place in Viewpark over five years ago will not go ahead.”
North Lanarkshire Council leader and Viewpark councillor Jim McCabe said he was bitterly disappointed at the decision and blamed rival operators Scotmid for mounting a ‘frivolous’ legal challenge which he said delayed Asda’s plans.
