Chain bids to open Motherwell restaurant

A restaurant chain says it could bring 70 jobs to Motherwell if it is allowed to take over a prominent building that is proving difficult to let.

Cook and Indi’s World Buffet has six restaurants throughout the west of Scotland and wants to open another in units at the corner of Airbles Road and Manse Road.

However, the chain faces a battle to get its plan approved after an initial view from North Lanarkshire Council that it’s ‘inappropriate’.

Consultants Montagu Evans, who submitted a report to the council, said “The units have been marketed to every major and local retailer with no success.

“Terms were also agreed with the Co-op previously, but this deal never progressed.”

Council planners have pointed out that a restaurant is ‘not within the list of appropriate uses’ for the Manse Road site.

They said it would require change of use consent and queried why the chain has not chosen a site in the town centre.

However, the consultants say there are no suitable town centre sites.

A planning application has been submitted to the council.
