There was a failed armed robbery at the Coral bookmakers in Tannochside on Thursday night.

Around 9pm a man brandishing a knife threatened staff at the shop in Old Edinburgh Road and demanding money.

When the staff members, a 58-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman refused to hand over any cash he ran out of the shop and into a silver car waiting outside which drove off along Aitkenhead Road.

Police are appealing for information following the attempted robbery.

DC Gary Lipscombe of Wishaw CID said: “Thankfully, neither member of staff were injured, but it was very upsetting for them to experience.

“The suspect is described as about 6ft in height, of slim build, and wearing a dark coloured tracksuit with a green scarf covering his face.

“Officers have spoken to those who were in the bookies at the time and are checking CCTV in the area.

“However, we need to speak to anyone who was either in the shop, but left prior to police arrival or who was in the area and maybe saw the car and the suspect before or after the incident to come forward.”

Anyone with information can contact officers at Wishaw CID via 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where details can be given in confidence.
