Motherwell boss praises players after first back-to-back wins since October

Their 2-1 victory over Dundee United last night, February 3, was also their first win at their Fir Park home ground since late October.

Motherwell’s last win at home was a 4-0 thumping of Ross County back on Saturday, October 24, and that was followed a week later by a 2-0 success away to Livingston, their last brace of victories on the trot until they followed up their 2-1 defeat of Ross County last Wednesday, January 27, with last night’s repeat of that scoreline.

It was also Alexander’s second three-point haul since taking over at Fir Park almost a month ago, accompanied by two draws and one loss.

Devante Cole and Christopher Long were ’Well’s scorers yesterday, with Ryan Edwards getting one back for the visitors, to get what will be a busy February off to a winning start, there being another six games to follow before March arrives.

They begin the month ninth in the Premiership with 25 points from as many games, just three points behind seventh-placed Dundee United.

Applauding his team’s efforts, former Salford City boss Alexander told the club’s website: “Dundee United certainly came here and gave us a real hard game, and I think it was two teams that wanted to win the game. You could see that with the amount of chances that were created by both teams.

“We’re happy that we got more goals than them, which gave us the three points.

“The players were exceptional. They tested us but we stood up to it and got the three points, so I’m really happy.

“There’s players out there throwing their bodies on the line for each other and fighting like dogs really to win a game of football, and that’s what we need. You need heart, and the players have shown lots of heart.”

Next up for Motherwell is a trip to second-placed Celtic, currently 27 points ahead of them, this Saturday, February 6, kicking off at 3pm.
