Prisoner 24601, known as Jean Valjean, breaks parole on his release from prison to create a new life in Les Miserables, out now at the Showcase in Bargeddie.

The big screen adaptation of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s record-breaking musical is based on the novel by Victor Hugo set in 19th Century France against the backdrop of the June Rebellion.

Directed by Tom Hooper, whose previous films include the Damned United and The King’s Speech, Les Miserables stars Hugh Jackman as Valjean and Russell Crowe as Inspector Javert.

Valjean starts life under a new identity becoming a factory owner and mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer, but having revealed himself to a court to save a man Javert has arrested by mistake, he goes back on the run.

However, not before promising a dieing Fantine (Anne Hathaway) that he will look after her child Cosette.

Nine years later, Valjean returns to a Paris on the
brink of revolution with the ever persistent Javert still
hot on his trail.
