And in fact, the big 6-O wasn't the only milestone for big-hearted dad of three Eddie Tomney.

And that’s because the donation made at the Scottish Blood Transfusion headquarters in Glasgow last Saturday was his 75th in total!

Edward, who is married to Karen and is dad to Phillipa, Sean and Edward Junior, gave his first pint of blood at age 18 and just kept on going!

The Motherwell FC fan who is a UPVC fabricator at Walkers Profiles in Motherwell's Range Road said: "If I can do something as small as giving a pint of blood to save someone’s life, then that’s an hour well spent.

"If we all donated think of the lives that could be saved.

"My mother had major heart surgery when I was young, and the thought of her needing life-saving blood made me understand the true value and necessity of donating.

"Imagine a loved one being injured or getting ill and not being able to access life saving blood?

"It doesn’t bear thinking about. An hour of out of our lives every three months could be the difference between saving a someone or not."

If there's one person who is not the slightest bit surprised by Eddie's generosity it is Karen.

She said: “Eddie is helpful and kind, and loves people.

"The kids often remark that dad must be held up because he’s blethering again.

"Eddie is a people person, who would do anything for anyone, and makes friends easily.

"He has a habit of getting to know all the staff in shops on a first name basis where ever we go, and they all remember him when we go back."

Anyone wishing to follow Eddie’s example will be interested to learn that the service is coming to Bellshill on Wednesday, April 28 and Thursday, April 29.

The afternoon and evening sessions will take place at Holy Family Parish Church but must be pre-booked to comply with Covid -19 restrictions.

You can become a donor between your 17th and 66th birthday.
