Pupils compete on world stage

They were participating in the World 5,000m challenge, an annual simultaneous relay competition which sees children across the planet compete at the same time in a bid to set world records.

The 10 pupils who made up the Holy Family team each completed 5x100m laps, totalling 5,000m, in a personal best time of 15 miss 59 secs.

Fellow pupils made donations to watch the race in aid of the Dystonia Society.

Head teacher Frances Wilson said: “We are very proud of our 10 athletes. It was wonderful to see the children encouraging their team mates and we are delighted with our time of 15:59.

“We have noticed an increase in fitness over the past year as a result of the daily mile, cross country club and the various after school clubs on offer.

“We hope this will encourage the children to enjoy keeping fit and healthy and the challenge is on for next year’s senior pupils to try and beat the time set this year.”

The youngsters didn’t just use their athletic prowess as they applied numeracy skills in a real life situation by measuring out the handover points.

NLL athletics development officer Kat Heron: “The pupils showed great team spirit and effort and gave it their all to cross the line in a personal best time.

“I want to give great credit to all the athletes and teachers for their hard work in preparation for this event.”
